A big plus was noticing you use the mad decoder, which is supposedely at least at the moment one of the best at accurately decoding mp3s, AND you have plugins
for wavpack, flac, and other essentials.

And of course it's open source, which has always bugged me about
using winamp, foobar, or others.

Thanks.

Is there a limit to the size of the playlist? I have about 20GB of music files stored on my portable USB hard disk. Using CoolPlayer, I built a playlist by adding a directory at a time, only the files I wanted, then saving the playlist. Somehow it seems to have saved only a fraction of the playlist. So I tried adding the entire music directory. That worked after I removed a subdirectory in which I had some Korean music. Apparently CoolPlayer doesn't like Korean characters in song data. So I built the playlist and saved it, 258KB. But if I get out of the program, the playlist editor can't load that playlist anymore. It's as if the file is too big to read.

I have further information about this bug. If I remove the coolplayer.ini file before running the program, it doesn't crash. Clearly something in the ini file is causing the crash.

So I experimented with that. If I have most recently run the program on a machine where my USB drive is "F:", and I'm moving to a machine where it's "L:", I can prevent the crash by manually editing coolplayer.ini and changing all occurrences of "F:" to "L:".

I have been in communication with NeoRame on this, and he suggested that I bring this to the attention of Mr. Haller at PortableApps.com. I shall post this bug report there.

NeoRame:

I think I've figured out why CoolPlayer+Portable crashes. When I run on a machine where my USB drive is F:, it leaves three lines in coolplayer.ini that refer to drive F:. When I go to a machine where my USB drive is L:, the program crashes. But if I manually edit the ini file and change all "F:" to "L:", it works fine.

It would seem that the problem is that the program is not yet fully portable. Those three lines need to reference relative paths instead of absolute paths.

I use the PortableApps release of CoolPlayer, installed on my USB hard disk. Until today, it worked great on every computer I had tried it on. Today, I had a third monitor installed. My PC has its native, integrated display controller, which I had not been using, plus a two-headed display controller that had two monitors. I now have both controllers in operation with three monitors and the Windows desktop spanning all three. Now, when I run CoolPlayer, I get a crash. If I press the Debug button, I get Microsoft Visual Studio with a popup window saying "Unhandled exception at 0x0040c068 in coolplayer+.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x56206e9b." At first, I suspected that the problem was that CoolPlayer was trying to start at a screen address that no longer existed. I had already fixed that problem for Microsoft Word. When I ran Word, it opened up and I had a taskbar icon for it (Windows XP) but the program's window did not appear on screen. I changed the logical screen layout to move different screens to different monitors and eventually found Word. After moving it to a different monitor, I put the logical screen layout back like it was supposed to be and that fixed that problem. So when CoolPlayer crashed, I tried doing the same thing, with no luck. So I'm stumped. If you can think of any diagnostic information I can collect for you, please send email.

I Don't know how more or less it makes it portable freindly but all the coolplayer is missing is some ID3 tagging and lyrics support and it can be one kick ass application

I have been using iTunes for three years now and I can't help but complare any software to it, Graphically Cool Player is on another level and it has a very easy and simple interface ... But something is missing

Some of the feature of iTunes like Lyrics support and ID3 tagging and maybe even a playlist selector and music organizer would be nice additions but like I said, I'm not the programmer here, you fellas are so I don't know how much of that is doable or not

Either way this player is pretty awesome and the whole portable apps suite that I'm using it on is pretty awesome too ... You've done a great job, Good work and keep it up

[General] 1. v219 not remembering more than 1 skin? 2. 219 not loading playlist.

I've gone back and am trying out all my old CP versions once more, trying to get one that would do it all again. But since XP, always one trouble or another.

Lately, CP doesn't remember more than one skin at a time, the last one used. I'll load a whole bunch but only 1 remembered. So went back to old standby v8472, it remembers them all but it doesn't have either the re-stack feature or whatever else it is that plays things in sequence as I don't know how to "un-shuffle" it. 8472 is also the only one that still loads the invidual playlists. All the newer versions I have don't. They only load the default one .

Is there any solution to these problems? If only 8472 could play shuffled but then could be unshuffled, or since numbering sometimes okay, would play in order, I'd just go back to using it.

But alternatively, since 219 _does_ handle both shuffle and non-shuffle modes, it would be a perfectly fine versions to use, if I could:
1) get it to remember more than one skin; and
2) get it to actually load the different SKINS' playlists according to each main INI rather than the ugly default playlist skin.

Pls note that I have "30" in options for the number of skins to remember so it isn't like I have a "1" in there only, which is the only reason to purposefully remember only one skin as it's doing, so far as I know.

Thx. :)

I like it!

How about also giving the playlist a toggle that, when activated, will force it to automatically scroll to the currently playing song? Alternatively, in the main player window do what you did with a left-click on the clock, but do it on the song title so that a click cycles among song title, artist and album?

And what would be really great is if the CoolPlayer team would take over the portabilization of the product and update it at PortableApps.com whenever you release a new version elsewhere. The biggest reason I started using it is because the portable version works so much better than VLC, the other portable player that's available there. Portable VLC crashes every few minutes.

Note: I really love the skin that the portable version of CoolPlayer has. The colors and styling are really, uh, searching for a word, "Cool".

difference for a one time set up.

should the text colour be the same regardless of it being selected ?
if its "selectedness" is to be taken into account, it could bring the
colours upto 4 (selected/not selected - and playing/not playing).

your suggestion of making the current song bold is good as well.
when i get some time, i will play around with these and post a preview
to see if everything is ok.

Thanks for agreeing to move forward on this. But please consider doubling the number of color options so that you have one set for the currently playing song and another set for all of the others. Or, to keep the set of options down, specify colors the way HTML does, e.g., "#FFFF00" for yellow (max red and max green but no blue). Then you'd need only two colors for text -- one for the current song and one for all others. You might also consider an option for the background color for the selected song and another option for the background color for all other songs.

Of course, I'm a techie and know hexadecimal numbers -- many of your users might not like HTMLish color codes.

hi paul,
thats a good suggestion, and i consider this a fix so it will make
it into 220 when i have time.

the current version, 219, and the previous releases have skins
disabled for the playlists, so a tutorial won't help this time.
it's nice to hear you tried as well.

it's not set in stone yet, but i propose adding 3 new options
to coolplayer.ini, something like

PlaylistTextRed=255
PlaylistTextGreen=255
PlaylistTextBlue=255

the default values would be 255 each, making the text white. and
then people could customise it.

hi jelomulawin,
i can understand that everyone has a different level of knowledge
of computers and i really appreciate the extra information you have
supplied. the more information, the better.

i notice you say you are running a modified version of XP SP3. this
may not be an issue, but it would help alot if you could try it on
another computer with a standard windows XP install, or standard
windows 2000 for example. i realise it may not be possible for you,
but sometimes the "lite" modifications for windows xp can cause
subtle issues, and this may be one of them.

if it crashes again, could you take several screenshots of the crash
dialog, as it says "module: user32.dll" on there. as an example, the
module may be different in this case.

i'm really pleased that you have came back with this extra information,
thank you. i shall try and look into this when i have time for 220.

if you can reproduce it on another computer, or standard windows xp
and provide the information, it would help even more.

also, in the coolplayer options page, set the output to "wave mapper"
does the crash still happen ?

thanks, and i hope it doesn't crash too much in the mean time. i know
how frustrating it can be.

1)Well, this time this is what appeared:
The Instruction at "0x00408cba" referenced memory at "0x00e5dcdc". The memory could not be "written".
It occured after 2 hours of playing coolplayer, since Windows startup.
2)216 songs in playlists
3)MP3 format - crashes on different songs
4)Output module - directx (directx 9.0c)
5)Hangs after a song is played, and basically, the next song doesn't play
6)Modified version of windows XP Professional x86 SP3 (MicroXP), 248 MB of RAM
7)coolplayer options unticked - "Read ID3 Tag (If any)"
                                "Read ID3 Tag of selected"
                                "Support ID3v2"
                                "Prefer native OGG tags"
                                "Load ID3 tags in background"
8)The playlist is saved
9)Shuffle mode at Startup
10)WMP is not installed in my PC
11)I am using coolplayer in the background, eg. surfing or playing games

Sorry, but I'm not really good at technical information, so these are the only details I can give for you now. Hope you can fix this bug. If you need more details, just ask me. Again, thanks for this amazing mp3 player! I can still live with this bug as it is very easy and fast to restart coolplayer^^

I downloaded Coolplayer+Portable 2.17.1 from PortableApps.com. I love the player, with only one tiny exception. In the playlist editor, the text for the currently playing song is in white on a light gray background. On some monitors I can barely make out what song is playing. If there were a configuration setting in an INI file that I could use to set the text color of the currently playing song, that would be great. Better yet would be the option to not only choose the color but also to boldface the text or to be able to change the background color behind it. I've looked at the tutorial for creating skins for the playlist, but I don't see anything that touches on this.
