What is the deal with this build numbering system?

I've just been to two different sites that are announcing that "build 209" is now available, and I come in and find that actually "build 210" is available, but some people are referring to it as "build 2.10". I'm using a copy that's over a year old that claims to be build 8472. Are you following any sort of system here, or are you trying to deliberately confuse people? And, hey, decimals are not optional. "Builds" are not the same thing as "versions". If I'm using build 8472 of version 1.1, or whatever, then you need to be referring to VERSION 2.10, not BUILD 2.10. Builds are subsets of versions. They're not interchangeable.
builds 8xxx were of the old closed source build, which you probably downloaded from www.daansystems.com .
builds 2xx are the new opensource sourceforge ones.
not too sure about the version numbering.
